If you or your SEO agency has mistakenly invested your trust in the original tools figures it’s time to review the keyword research aspect of all your SEO campaigns to ensure that you are not walking towards a dead end. When comparing projected keyword traffic with actual keyword traffic it has long resonated with SEO’s that the Google keyword tool vastly over estimates the traffic levels… even with exact match selected.
It started when traffic figures didn’t live up to expectations of positions for high traffic phrases. We knew the approximate click through rates of various positions on Google’s first page. We were given traffic data from the keyword tool. But the two certainly did not marry up.
With the additional data provided by webmaster tools giving us actual click through rates for each key phrase the plot thickened further.
Last year’s Google’s keyword research tool update was aimed at usability and additional features. The long term goal was reported by Google to combine both the keyword tool and the search based keyword tool.
The search based keyword tool has large numbers of phrases deliberately removed from the data. So many people have been working with the SK Tool in combination with the original keyword tool and PPC figures in order to make an educated guess at traffic.
It does not appear yet that the traffic data in the SK tool and the updated keyword tool marry up but they are a lot closer so it seems that Google are working on the accuracy of the tool.
The problem this presents is that some SEO’s may be half way into a campaign having invested both time and money into phrases based on the original keyword tool’s figures.
So what does this mean?
If you or your SEO agency has mistakenly invested your trust in the original tools figures it’s time to review the keyword research aspect of all your SEO campaigns to ensure that you are not walking towards a dead end.
